Weekend itinerary

A Lake Superior-first Duluth weekend.

Start with Canal Park and the harbor, give Saturday to Lake Superior or the North Shore, and keep enough evening for a warm meal after the lake wind.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A Duluth weekend can combine Canal Park, one North Shore or city-trail day, and a final Lakewalk or overlook before departure.

Best length

2 nights

Arrive Friday, give Saturday to the lake or North Shore, and keep Sunday easy for coffee, one view, and the drive out.

Stay

Canal Park Lodge

A waterfront hotel in Canal Park near the Lakewalk, ship canal, and bridge. Choose it when walking to harbor attractions and nearby meals matters more than downtown nightlife.

Main activity

Canal Park, the ship canal, and Lakewalk

Give the chosen Saturday route the middle of the day and return to Duluth for dinner and a final harbor view.

Pace

Lake-and-harbor weekend

Good for travelers who want Canal Park, shipwatching, Lake Superior weather, and one outdoor or North Shore stretch without overfilling the trip.

Friday

Check in near the water, walk the ship canal, and eat in Canal Park.

Check in, walk the ship canal or Lakewalk, and eat in Canal Park, downtown, or along the east lakefront.

Saturday

Start at Pier B, then choose the harbor-and-ridge day or the North Shore day.

Choose one main route: Lakewalk and harbor attractions, Highway 61 to a named turn-around, or a city trail and overlook.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to Duluth before dinner.

After a North Shore drive or trail, allow time to change clothes and reach the restaurant without extending the outing into the evening.

Sunday

Coffee, one short lake view, then I-35.

Choose coffee in Canal Park or downtown, add a short harbor or Enger Tower stop, and leave after checkout.
